Expansion and redevelopment of Hôpital de La Malbaie

Context

Located in the heart of the Charlevoix-Est region, the Hôpital de La Malbaie provides services to the local and regional population in complementarity with the Hôpital de Baie-Saint-Paul. To address functional challenges, upgrade existing facilities, and expand the range of services available in the region, the project involves the expansion and renovation of this hospital, originally built in 1942. LEED v4 certification for the design and construction of sustainable buildings: Healthcare is being pursued for this project.

The 15,500 m² expansion unfolds across five levels. The ground floor houses the emergency department, while the second level brings together the outpatient clinics, specimen collection, laboratories, medical imaging, medical electrophysiology, and food and support services. The third level is devoted to the operating suite, the medical device reprocessing unit (sterilization), endoscopy, respiratory physiology, and inhalation therapy, as well as the ambulatory care units. The fourth level houses the inpatient care units, while the fifth contains the pharmacy and mechanical rooms, equipping the facility with all the electromechanical infrastructure required for a 21st-century hospital.

As the layout and conditions of the existing main pavilion does not allow for the upgrading of care units and diagnostic services, 3,500 m² will be renovated to accommodate rehabilitation, administrative and support services, ancillary spaces, and staff change rooms.

The integration of the project into its surroundings — informed by an analysis of human, natural, and built factors — is the starting point of the design approach. The L-shaped massing of the new pavilion is organized around two existing buildings retained until the end of construction to maintain hospital operations and facilitate construction phasing; their demolition is planned to make way for parking once the expansion is operational.

Located in the heart of downtown La Malbaie, on the banks of the Malbaie River, the project makes full use of a site with an exceptional natural setting. Particular attention is paid to maximizing natural light, while the choice of materials and the composition of the facades ensure visual and architectural continuity between the existing building and the new pavilion.
