Envision Certification for the P4 Parking Garage: Two Firsts in Canada
The P4 Parking Facility at YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, designed in consortium with Lemay, has received the international Envision Verified Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). Announced on September 28 by ADM Aéroports de Montréal, this distinction makes P4 the first airport infrastructure and the first parking facility in Canada to earn this recognition.
Opened in February 2024, this ambitious project is among the first completed under the airport's vast infrastructure modernization program. Connected to the terminal by a shuttle service, it offers more than 2,800 convenient parking spaces. With a footprint of 28,545 m² and a total floor area of 111,484 m² spread over four levels, it also houses car rental offices, passenger waiting and assistance areas, and electric vehicle charging stations.
Designed as a pilot project resilient to climate change, P4 showcases pioneering features intended for integration into the airport's future facilities, along with innovative solutions that help mitigate the urban heat island effect and enhance biodiversity. Extensive research led to the installation of "maintenance-free" green roof strips and photovoltaic panels, as well as an automated guidance system that directs drivers to available spaces.
The certification was awarded following an assessment of 64 sustainability and resilience criteria covering areas such as quality of life, stakeholder engagement, resource management, energy efficiency, and environmental protection. Among the measures recognized are sustainable stormwater management, the diversion of nearly 90% of construction waste, a modular concrete structure with an extended lifespan, and an adaptable design that will allow the building to be converted to other uses in the future, extending its service life and reducing its carbon footprint.
The P4 parking garage demonstrates that performance, sustainability, and resilience can go hand in hand in essential infrastructure. Reimagining airport parking in line with ADM's vision for the future, alongside Lemay and the entire project team, was an exceptionally stimulating challenge.
